About Traditional Chinese Medicine
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic healthcare system that originated in Ancient China and has developed over thousands of years. At its core is the concept of Qi—a vital life force or energy that flows through pathways in the body called meridians. Health, according to TCM, is achieved when Qi flows freely and remains in balance.
Yin and Yang
In addition to Qi, TCM emphasizes the balance of complementary forces known as Yin and Yang. Yin represents the more passive, cooling aspect of energy, while Yang is associated with the active, warming force.
The Five Elements
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) also incorporates the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—a framework that explains the dynamic interrelationships between body systems, emotions, seasons, and natural phenomena. This holistic model forms the foundation for both diagnosis and treatment in TCM.
A Holistic Way of Healing
TCM does not focus on isolated symptoms or specific diseases, instead it emphasizes treating the whole person – body, mind, and environment and identifying disharmony, rather than treating one symptom.
